Maria Nikolaeva, a talented young Sheffield violinist will give her final local solo performance before beginning her studies at the Royal Academy of Music this autumn, where she has been awarded a scholarship to study with Professor of violin, Sini Simonen. Maria is the youngest member of the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra, which she joined at the age of 15, sitting in the first violin section alongside her father, Anton.

Maria began studying the violin with Dr David Milsom in 2019 and has since established herself as an accomplished solo, chamber and orchestral musician. Maria is Principal Second Violin of City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra and recently became a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. She is also a founding member of the West Riding Ensemble, with whom she has performed and recorded a wide range of chamber music. Her final solo performance in Sheffield before embarking on her studies will be this Saturday when she plays Saint-Saëns' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso with the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra at Victoria Hall.

Chair of the Sheffield Philharmonic, Nicola Elam commented: "Maria is an outstanding young musician and we're delighted to feature her as one of the soloists in our Summer Showcase. The concert celebrates the talent within the orchestra, and we're incredibly proud to see Maria taking the next step in her musical journey at the Royal Academy of Music."

Speaking about the performance, Maria said: "I chose the piece because it's such a staple of the violin repertoire, and I love the balance between the beauty of the introduction and the virtuosity, fire and excitement of the Rondo Capriccioso. I'm really excited to share my love of music with the audience."
The Summer Showcase concert marks the conclusion of Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra's 2025/26 season and shines a spotlight on the talent within the orchestra. Alongside Maria's performance, audiences will hear orchestra members featured as soloists in works by Mozart, Guilmant and Chopin, alongside orchestral music by Louise Farrenc and Felix Mendelssohn.
The concert takes place at Victoria Hall, Sheffield, on Saturday 11 July at 3.00pm. Lasting approximately one hour, it offers an accessible introduction to live classical music as well as a chance to hear some of the city's most talented amateur musicians perform in the heart of Sheffield.
